R-36O 8K69 orbital missile

R-36O (8K69) was the three-stage fractional-orbit variant of the Soviet R-36 heavy missile. It combined the R-36 first and second stages with an orbital stage that could deorbit its payload before completing one revolution. Flight testing began in 1965, the system entered deployment in 1968, and it was withdrawn in 1983 under the SALT II prohibition on fractional-orbit weapons.
