The X-30 National Aero-Space Plane was a joint NASA and Department of Defense research program intended to demonstrate the technologies for a reusable hypersonic aircraft capable of horizontal runway takeoff and landing, sustained air-breathing hypersonic flight, and single-stage-to-orbit operations. NASA reports that only a one-third-scale concept demonstrator was built for high-temperature tunnel testing; Congress ended funding in 1994 before a full-scale X-30 aircraft was built or flown. The program advanced high-temperature materials, structures, aerothermodynamics, and air-breathing propulsion research that informed later hypersonic efforts.
