ShinMaywa PS-1 / US-1 STOL Flying-Boat Family

The ShinMaywa PS-1 and US-1 form a Japanese family of four-engine short-takeoff-and-landing flying boats developed for demanding maritime operations. The PS-1 used boundary-layer control and spray-suppression features for patrol work from rough water. Its PS-1 Kai development added retractable landing gear and became the amphibious US-1 search-and-rescue aircraft, enabling rescued people to be transferred directly for medical care on land; the improved US-1A extended that service before replacement by the US-2.
