Start-1 was a Russian four-stage, all-solid orbital launch vehicle adapted from the road-mobile RS-12M Topol missile, known to NATO as the SS-25. It flew a small series of missions from Plesetsk and Svobodny between 1993 and 2006, carrying technology, Earth-observation, mapping, and scientific payloads into low Earth orbit.
