SUNSAT Microsatellite Design

SUNSAT was the microsatellite design developed at Stellenbosch University’s Electronic Systems Laboratory for South Africa’s first launched satellite. The platform combined a high-resolution Earth imager, amateur-radio communications, precision attitude control and scientific experiments, including payload work with NASA. It was built by postgraduate engineering students as an integrated spacecraft research and technology demonstration. The flight article launched aboard a Delta II in February 1999 and operated until January 2001. Its imaging system returned three-band observations at 15 m ground-pixel scale, while radio and spacecraft experiments established a foundation for later South African small-satellite engineering.
