The Tupolev Tu-22M is a Soviet and Russian variable-sweep supersonic bomber family developed for long-range maritime and ground-strike missions. The Tu-22M0 first flew in 1969, the Tu-22M3 development aircraft flew in 1977, and the modernized series entered service in 1989; the lineage remains one of the defining heavy strike-aircraft families of the late Cold War and post-Soviet era.
