Able 1 (Pioneer 0)

Able 1, retroactively called Pioneer 0, was the physical lunar-probe spacecraft launched on 17 August 1958 in the first attempted deep-space mission. The Thor first stage exploded 73.6 seconds after launch, ending the flight before lunar injection while establishing the opening Pioneer article.
