Amelia Earhart bought this Lockheed Vega 5B, registration NR-7952, in 1930 and had it strengthened and equipped for long-distance flying. In May 1932 she flew it alone from Newfoundland to Northern Ireland, becoming the first woman and second person to fly solo across the Atlantic. She also used it for a solo transcontinental flight before selling it in 1933; the aircraft entered the Smithsonian collection in 1966.
