The sole XPBB-1 prototype, BuNo 3144, was the Boeing Model 344 flight article tested near Seattle in 1942. Edmund T. Allen flew the Sea Ranger's first flight from Lake Washington on 9 July 1942; the Navy retained the aircraft for evaluation after series production was cancelled.
