Serial 39-556 was the first flying Consolidated Model 32/XB-24 prototype. Consolidated chief test pilot William B. Wheatley flew it from Lindbergh Field in San Diego on 29 December 1939, beginning the flight-test programme that led to the Liberator family and its many Allied variants.
