Deep Space 1
Deep Space 1 was NASA’s first New Millennium technology-demonstration spacecraft, launched on 24 October 1998 to validate ion propulsion, autonomous navigation, and other high-risk systems. It flew past asteroid 9969 Braille and comet 19P/Borrelly before its ion engine was finally turned off on 18 December 2001.
