English Electric P.1A prototype WG760 was flown by chief test pilot Roland Beamont from Boscombe Down on 4 August 1954. The research aircraft established the aerodynamic and propulsion basis for the Lightning and became the first British aircraft to exceed Mach 1 in level-flight development testing.
