Gemini spacecraft 2 flew an uncrewed suborbital qualification mission on January 19, 1965, validating the spacecraft's heat protection, separation, major systems, and recovery before Gemini 3. The U.S. Air Force then modified the recovered capsule with a hatch through its heat shield, renamed it Gemini B, and flew it again on November 3, 1966 to qualify the Manned Orbiting Laboratory crew-transfer design. It was recovered a second time and is preserved for display.
