Liberty Bell 7 was Mercury spacecraft No. 11, flown by Gus Grissom on Mercury-Redstone 4. It completed the second United States crewed suborbital flight on July 21, 1961; Grissom escaped safely after splashdown, but the capsule sank when its hatch opened prematurely and was recovered from the Atlantic in 1999.
