Luna 1 was the Ye-1 No. 4 spacecraft launched on January 2, 1959. Intended to impact the Moon, it passed about 6,000 kilometres away after an upper-stage overburn, returned measurements of the interplanetary environment, and became the first spacecraft to escape Earth’s gravity and enter heliocentric orbit.
