Mars Climate Orbiter was the physical NASA interplanetary weather and communications-relay spacecraft launched on 11 December 1998. It was lost during Mars orbit insertion on 23 September 1999 after a navigation-unit mismatch sent it into the atmosphere below the planned corridor.
