The Mars Pathfinder lander used a parachute, retrorockets and airbags to land in Ares Vallis on July 4, 1997. It deployed the Sojourner rover and returned more than 16,500 surface images plus atmospheric, meteorological and engineering data before its final transmission on September 27, 1997.
