Northrop converted the former YB-35 airframe 42-102367 into the first YB-49, installing eight Allison J35 turbojets for the all-jet flying-wing test program. Northrop test pilot Max Stanley made its first flight on 21 October 1947 before the airframe continued performance-instrumentation flight testing.
