N747NA was a Boeing 747SP converted into the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, a joint NASA and German Aerospace Center mission. A large door in the aft fuselage exposed a stabilized 2.5-meter infrared telescope above most atmospheric water vapor, enabling observations of star formation, magnetic fields, water on the Moon, and other otherwise obscured phenomena. Science flights ended in 2022.
