SUNSAT, also known as SO-35, was South Africa’s first launched satellite, built and operated by Stellenbosch University’s Electronic Systems Laboratory. It lifted off on February 23, 1999 as a secondary payload on a Delta II alongside Denmark’s Ørsted satellite and the primary ARGOS spacecraft. SUNSAT provided amateur-radio services, Earth imaging and spacecraft experiments. Contact ended on January 19, 2001. The operations team’s February 1 announcement reported an irreversible failure after unsuccessful recovery attempts. It considered physical damage among possible explanations, without confirming a collision or a specific failed component. Loss of communications does not establish the date of atmospheric reentry.
