Thor-Able I vehicle 130 launched Able 2, later named Pioneer 1, on 11 October 1958 in NASA's first space mission. An accelerometer error caused the upper stage to shut down early, so the probe did not reach the Moon, but it returned 43 hours of near-Earth scientific data.
