Thor-Delta E1 article 467/D039 made the first flight of the E1 configuration and launched Explorer 33 on 1 July 1966. Excess second-stage acceleration prevented the planned lunar orbit, but controllers redirected the spacecraft into a productive highly elliptical Earth orbit and NASA later declared the mission successful.
