Aircraft 77114 was the final Tu-144 built and had never entered commercial service. Tupolev rebuilt the Tu-144D with new engines and instrumentation as the Tu-144LL flying laboratory, which carried out a joint NASA-Russian high-speed research program and generated full-scale data for possible future supersonic passenger aircraft.
