UARS

UARS was a retired NASA Earth-orbiting observatory launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on 15 September 1991 to make a systematic study of Earth’s upper atmosphere. Its ten instruments measured atmospheric chemistry, winds, temperatures, solar ultraviolet irradiance, and particle inputs; five instruments continued operating until decommissioning on 14 December 2005.
