The original XR-4 prototype demonstrated that Sikorsky's single-main-rotor helicopter layout could become a practical military aircraft. It first flew in January 1942, completed a multi-stop cross-country delivery to Army testing at Wright Field, and was later upgraded to XR-4C configuration. The United States Air Force transferred the surviving aircraft to the Smithsonian, where it is displayed at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
