Zond 4 was the 7K-L1 No. 6L flight article launched on March 2, 1968. The uncrewed spacecraft flew to roughly lunar distance in the direction opposite the Moon to test deep-space navigation and high-speed reentry, but a star-tracker failure caused an off-course ballistic return and automatic destruction over the Gulf of Guinea on March 9.
